Corwin’s Story
Chuck and Elouise Corwin were commissioned as church planting missionaries to Japan by Church of the Open Door shortly after World War Il. In the midst of establishing an evangelical church in Tokyo, Chuck discovered that the love of his heart was discipling university students. The idea of establishing a residential facility where Christian students would encourage one another in their walk with God during university became a reality when the Tokyo Tyrannus Hall was founded in 1959.
1950’s - 1960’s
In the 1970’s Chuck and Elouise would leave Japan for two months in the winter and teach missions at Union Biblical Seminary in Pune, India. When Chuck shared about his ministry in Tokyo, Christian leaders in South Asia felt that a live-in discipleship ministry for university students would also work well. The second Tyrannus Hall opened in the Chittagong Hills, Bangladesh in 1981, followed in 1987 by a Tyrannus Halls in Shillong, India and then into Kathmandu, Nepal in 1990.
1970’s - 1980’s
Over the years the ministry of Tyrannus Halls has grown to include women, with the first Lydia Hall opening in Shillong, India in 1998. Today in South Asia, there are Tyrannus and Lydia Halls in Japan, Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Myanmar and Cambodia. Starting in 2000, the Halls began expanding into Europe, starting in Czechia, followed by Hungary and then Romania. Today, 16 Tyrannus Halls and 4 Lydia Halls are carrying on the vision of Chuck and Elouise Corwin to disciple university students in small residential settings.
1990’s - 2020’s
Though Chuck (1925-2018) and Elouise (1925-2019) have gone to be with their Lord, their vision continues to move forward through Tyrannus and Lydia Halls.
